Azer Asgarov started playing sports at the age of seven. First, he went to freestyle wrestling, then to judo. He continued his secondary education at the Republican Sports School of Olympic Reserve (now the Olympic Sports Lyceum). He took part in the republican and all-union championships and took prize-winning places. He graduated from high school with a degree in judo. He graduated from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports (now the Academy). He is a coach-teacher by profession.

Azer Asgarov is the President of the Azerbaijan Judo Veterans Association, a member of the Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation, the winner of world and European championships among masters and veterans. The achievements of the Judo Club 2012, which he created to contribute to the development of sports in Azerbaijan, are growing every year. The club's players show high results in local and international competitions.
