The 44-day Patriotic War, which began on 27 September 2020, marked a glorious chapter of victory in Azerbaijan’s modern history. Under the resolute leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the victorious Commander-in-Chief, the valiant Azerbaijani Armed Forces liberated our lands after many years of occupation. This historic victory was founded on the extraordinary heroism of our soldiers and officers, the unwavering unity of our people and their love for the homeland.

This victory was more than a military triumph. It was an affirmation of Azerbaijan’s national will, its determination to uphold its statehood and the unity of its people and armed forces. The courage displayed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the battlefield drew the world’s attention and reshaped the realities of the region. The full restoration of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty through the counterterrorism measures conducted in September 2023 brought that victory to its culmination.

Yet this victory came at a profound and sacred cost: the lives of our martyrs. Their names and memories are kept alive, while their families continue to receive care and support. Our martyrs hold an eternal place in the heroic annals of Azerbaijan’s history.

I often watch videos on social media showing the bravery of our servicemen during the Patriotic War and the counterterrorism operation. Each time, I feel immense pride and deep admiration for the courage of the young people who sacrificed their lives for their homeland. Their bravery, resolve and patriotism give us much to reflect on. No challenge is insurmountable for a nation with such heroes.

Today, the unprecedented reconstruction under way in Karabakh and East Zangezur is also a powerful tribute to our martyrs. The rebuilding of devastated towns and villages, the construction of roads, schools and hospitals, and the return of people to their native homes through the Great Return are a continuation of that glorious victory. They are a tangible expression of our commitment to the homeland entrusted to us by those who gave their lives for it.

In Karabakh and East Zangezur, the sacred memory of our martyrs lives on in the light of every new home, in every schoolyard and in every Azerbaijani flag flying overhead. Alongside liberating our lands, they left us a profound responsibility: to protect our homeland, advance its development and pass it on to future generations stronger than before.

On 27 September, Remembrance Day, I bow my head in honour of all our martyrs.

Rest in peace, sons of the Motherland. Thanks to your heroism, Karabakh is free and Azerbaijan is whole. Your cherished memory will live forever in the hearts of our people.
